POEMS

A Friendly Farewell
by Wendy Curles Matthews ~92

As we say Good-bye to our classmates and friends,
As we wipe away the tears,
We'll always remember the great times we had,
And shared throughout the years.

The Lord took you away,
And we'll never know why,
What reasons could he have,
To make us all cry.

Sometimes you never know,
What fate might hold that day,
For God will watch over us,
He will show us the way.

Our Grieving is never ending,
Our love is forever true,
To the Deep Creek High School Memoriam,
We will miss each one of you.

Good-bye Is Not Forever
by Wendy Curles Matthews ~92

There's no such thing as good-bye forever,
We will meet again someday,
For another time we will be together,
By the Lord's mysterious way.

We pray these friends are saved,
And beyond these pearly gates,
For there is peace in our hearts,
And our tears, they cannot wait.

Now these days of mourning have come,
That these friends have sadly passed,
We pray that God will keep them safe,
This is all we have asked.

It's hard to say good-bye,
To someone you know and love,
For there's no such thing as forever,
Just look to the heaven's above.

So we bid these friends a fond farewell,
Til we meet again someday,
From Classmates, Family and Friends,
Their memory will always stay.

'"We loved them, yes we loved them,
but Jesus loved them more.
As he gently called them
to yonder shining shore.
The golden gates were opened,
a gentle voice said "come"
And with farewells unspoken,
they calmly entered home."

Sheila Taylor ~77

We remember the days you were with us,
we hold them close and dear.
Of games that were played,
a great band parade and music so nice to our ear.
A time we were young,
so much laughter and fun,
great joy with hardly a tear
Those days of our past
 we'll remember to the last
and smile for our friends of those years.

Mike Albertson ~71

You are Missed
by Regina Beiler Harris~75

 Classmate, friend or rival...
you are missed and not forgotten.
The good and bad times shared
are all missed and not forgotten.
For you walk in the halls
of our memory forever.

E. W. Chittum
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Edwin Wilson Chittum, 91, formerly of Chesapeake and longtime resident of Great Bridge, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Mr. Chittum was a former superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools and a founding father of the City of Chesapeake. Born in Fairfield, Va., Mr. Chittum was the son of the late Stuart A. and Maude Weeks Chittum and was married for 65 years to the late Sue Kennedy Chittum. He was also predeceased by two brothers, William B. Chittum and P. Winston Chittum and two sisters, Elizabeth Burrell and Faye Webb. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1933. His first teaching position was a one-room school in Rockbridge County. In 1934, Mr. Chittum began teaching English, history and math, as well as coaching all sports at a school in Staunton, Va. He was well-equipped for the job, having been a catcher on his college baseball team and a high jumper on the track team. A knee injury forced him to quit football and basketball. After service as a high school principal in Augusta County and in Waynesboro, Va., Mr. Chittum joined the Norfolk County Schools in 1944. In 1945, he became principal of Norview High School. Chittum Field, the athletic stadium at Norview High School, was named for him in 1958. That same year, E.W. Chittum Elementary School was also named for him. Appointed Norfolk County superintendent in 1949, Mr. Chittum had a team style of leadership. He said he had learned it as player and coach in a variety of sports. Calmness and patience in bad situations were other lessons he said sports had taught him. When Norfolk County and the city of South Norfolk merged to form Chesapeake in 1963, he became superintendent of schools in the new municipality. An active participant in the county-city negotiations that led to the merger, his personal style was that of a quiet power broker. In 1972, Mr. Chittum was named Chesapeake's First Citizen. The citation said that his "unique ability" had guided the city schools toward many commendations. Some of the civic duties he was most proud of were his service as chairman of the fund-raising committee that conducted the successful drive to finance the construction of Chesapeake General Hospital and chairman of the fund-raising committee for Eastern Virginia Medical School. He later served on the Board of Governors for that institution. He was known for his keen business sense and, after his retirement as superintendent in 1975, he became involved in a wide range of business and civic affairs, including First Virginia Bank, AAA of Tidewater and the Hunter Foundation. Mr. Chittum was the founding president of the Chesapeake Rotary Club.
Mr. Chittum is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Susan Lynne Chittum and husband Dr. Robert Hallmark of Virginia Beach, currently stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan and Carol Anne Chittum of Norfolk; and a sister-in-law, Frances Chittum of Fairfield, Va.  The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Randy McMillen. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin on Tuesday with the family receiveing friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Great Bridge Chapel, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Virginia Medical School, 358 Mowbray Arch, Norfolk, VA 23510. In a 1982 newspaper interview, Mr. Chittum recalled that teaching had been the most enjoyable part of his career because it allowed him to watch children develop in mind and body and to be close to all their youthful energy.

Robert F. "Bob" McKernan Jr.
DOTHAN, GA -- Robert McKernan Jr., died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 52 On 9-3-05, while giving his heart to those in need from Hurricane Katrina, Bob McKernan was called home. Bob was doing what he loved most: standing behind his grill cooking for the ones he loved, "everyone." Bob lived a life of service, whether grilling, working on projects for friends and family or spending time with all the children who came into his home. He cherished any opportunity to teach children how to swim or play any sport. He opened his arms to all ages. Bob's time with Charlene was filled with love and dreams. They enjoyed their home, friends, family and neighbors. They were best friends. Their relationship was an example for all couples to live by. Very few people find their soul mates in life, but Bob and Charlene did. They enjoyed doing everything together and their time meant everything to them, from football to the beautiful tropical paradise they built in their yard and around the pool. They had a special "home" that brought many hours of fun, laughter and love. Chad and Bob had a special father and son relationship for all father and sons to envy. Their time together provided the learning and fun that every son deserves. Manhood can only be bestowed by our fathers and Bob succeeded this with Chad. One of the most loved treasures on earth is a "friend that is closer than a brother." Bob was blessed with that friend in Jeff Mauldin. Their time in ‘the corner' is special and filled with memories of projects, sports and plans of things to come. Bob will be missed by all; may we all strive to be a servant as was Bob. Bob had a special niece, Peri, who was more than a daughter to him. Besides Peri, there were friendships with the grandchildren of friends, who were constantly in Bob's life â€" Alex and Kortnie Mauldin and Audree and Meri Grace Miller. He lived for making children happy and always had a knack for doing so. Bob was employed with Cummings Signs for the past six years as a sales representative. Bob was predeceased by a very special mother-in-law, Dean Chapman of Donalsonville, Ga., and his grandparents. He had a second degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, served in the U.S. Navy, USS Tigrone AGSS419, with eight years of submarine service and was a First Class Quarter Master. There are some very special people I must say by name: Wilamena, thank you for telling Perry God loves him making his heart seek the angels at Faith Alive Church. Thank you for showing him the way, you helped him find peace he couldn't find anywhere else. Chesapeake School System, Deep Creek teachers and staff, you taught and worked with my son helping him use that wonderful mind of his, enabling him to graduate with honors and achieve his dream of entering O.D.U. To the students, you saw past outward appearances and loved his heart. Mr. Histon you never let him lay there and veg, you put your heart and soul into keeping that brain going. Dr. Sue Lee, you took my boy in your arms from day one and showed me that Perry can dream, allowing him to realize he could be anything he desired.
To the staff at King's Daughters: When I had no strength left, you did. Don, you always knew where to find his blood and not hurt him. Dr. St. Clair, you made his dream come true, you helped him to reach the highest he could, giving him the dignity he sought for so long. Perry, you touched so many, your life gave me the strength to go on, you taught me the meaning of love. Brian and I will always keep you close and live by remembering your adventurous spirit.
